They say miracles do happen when you believe. But why is it that some prayers are answered while some are not, even if you believed in God? Why is it that even though you’ve prayed hard enough you still didn’t get your healing? Why is it that even when you believed God can help you solve your problems, you’re still in despair? Why is it that faith seems to work at times but most of the time it doesn’t? Is there something wrong?
I may not have all the answers you seek but let me help you by diving deeper into the idea of faith and believing. How much faith do you need to have in order to see results? How much believing do you need to do?
Let’s look into the story of the Roman centurion during the time of Jesus and see if we can get some insights about faith. Matthew tells us the story.
5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.”
7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?”
8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
Notice the centurion’s faith. To him, there was no question that Jesus heals. He was not there to see if Jesus could indeed heal his servant. He knows as a fact (and reckons it as his reality) that his servant would be healed when Jesus says the word.
9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.
Jesus was amazed by the centurion’s faith.
13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment. (emphasis mine)
This is powerful. The servant was healed the very moment Jesus spoke the word.
As You Believe so shall It be
So it happened just as the centurion believed it would. If he believed that Jesus will have to go and lay his hands on the servant then that’s what he would get.
Believing is a matter of accepting what’s real. Even if you say you believe but if in your heart it’s not real, then that’s not faith. It’s a matter of the heart.
In another instance, Jesus was teaching His disciples about faith.
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.
23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.
24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (emphasis mine)
Without a Doubt
Faith is about believing without a doubt in your heart. You may say that you believe but if there’s doubt in your heart then there’s unbelief. So faith then is all about removing any unbelief in your heart. It’s all about the heart.
You may be praying for quite some time now and you’re still not getting the results you’re seeking. Why do you think this is so? Maybe God has been speaking to you while you were reading this article. Search your heart and see if there’s still doubt remaining. Allow Him to illuminate your heart so that you may see clearly.
You may say you believe in God but in actuality your life doesn’t reflect having faith in Him. Or you may not believe in all these stuff at all but you want to start believing. What should you do?
Believing is a decision. Start with a simple prayer. First, acknowledge that you don’t have faith in God. Then ask Him to change your heart so that you may believe again. The very act of praying this prayer is evidence that you’re making a decision to believe in Him. Continue to pray and whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
It’s so good to believe in God. It’s the most radical thing you could ever do in your life. Imagine a life filled with faith instead of doubt and unbelief. It’s a life of freedom and victory. It’s a life full of endless possibilities. It’s a life where nothing is impossible.
